EuroVelo 1 in Spain follows the two ancient routes of the "Camino de Santiago" and the "Ruta Vía de la Plata". The Camino de Santiago or the ‘Way of Saint James’ is a network of trails traditionally followed by pilgrims on their way to the shrine of the apostle Saint James, in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, north western Spain. The Via de la Plata route dates back to the Roman era, during the reigns of the emperors Trajan and Hadrian, when a grand access route was created in the west of the peninsula, linking the Cantabrian coast with the lands of southern Hispania.
