Continued success in 2017: EuroVelo 15 – Rhine Cycle Route

Many of you enjoyed cycling on the EuroVelo 15 - Rhine Cycle Route in 2017, the first fully certified route in the EuroVelo network. We want to use this opportunity to look back at new developments along the route this year.

The Rhine Cycle route’s popularity has continued to grow strongly this year. It was the third most popular long-distance cycling route in Germany, according to a poll by our German National EuroVelo Coordinator ADFC published in March 2017, moving up three ranks compared to the previous year’s survey. The route also for the first time featured in the top ten of the most popular long-distance cycle routes outside of Germany, according to the same poll.

Earlier in the year we reported on how cyclists who complete the 1,233-km EuroVelo 15 - Rhine Cycle Route, which passes four countries, can obtain a certificate when reaching the northern end of the route in the Hook of Holland. People from all over the world have finished the route successfully and arrived in that little coastal town in the southwestern corner of Holland where the Rhine river enters the North Sea. More than 200 certificates have already been handed out to cyclists over the past three years. Most of them were from Switzerland and Germany but some were also from more distant countries such as Australia. They all have amazing stories to share.

Elsewhere, the response to our Summer Photo Contest was huge this year. The best three pictures came from Edouard Sabourdy, Liewis Sinkke and Lien Verschooten. Receiving the most likes and shares, Edouard Sabourdy won the main prize, the eight days / seven nights cycle-touring package along a section of the EuroVelo – 15 Rhine Cycle Route. You can again have a look at the best three pictures and all other beautiful images submitted as part of the photo contest in our Facebook gallery here.

If you’re unsure about your cycle-holiday destination next year, consider exploring the beauty of this river landscape and the picturesque towns and villages lining its banks. If you want to find out more about EuroVelo 15, please visit the official EuroVelo 15 - Rhine Cycle Route website.
