Ed's EuroVelo Insider Tip : feel the pulse of the heart of England

Feel the pulse of the heart of England on EuroVelo 2 - Capitals Route between Bristol and London. This section is a part of the EuroVelo insider tips series - what is your favourite?

Here's our first of the EuroVelo insider tips by Ed from the EuroVelo Team

This section of the EuroVelo 2 – Capitals Route connects London, one of the most exciting cities in the world, with Bristol, Britain’s first Cycling City and hub of the National Cycle Route Network.  These two metropoles with their vibrant cycling cultures, are connected by an attractive 120 mile (190 km) cycling route that crosses the heart of England.

Known as National Cycle Route 4 in the UK, some of the highlights of this section of EuroVelo 2 are the beautiful Richmond Park (bottom-left picture) in west London, Henry VIII’s royal palace Hampton Court (bottom-right picture), the dramatic Windsor Castle – current home of the British Royal family – and the 29 locks at Caen Hill on the Kennet and Avon Canal.

Perhaps the most famous section however, is between Bristol with the Georgian Spa town of Bath.  This former railway line was converted to a 15 mile (24 km) off-road cycleway by the cycling charity Sustrans between 1979 and 1986.  As such it was the forerunner of the National Cycle Route Network in the UK and many other similar cycle routes across Europe.
