Hook of Holland: Certificates await cyclists who complete EuroVelo 15 - Rhine Cycle Route

Cyclists who complete the 1,233 km long EuroVelo 15- Rhine Cycle Route can obtain a certificate upon reaching the northern end of the route - in Hook of Holland - where the River Rhine enters the North Sea.

The idea of handing out certificates to cyclists who successfully complete EuroVelo 15 was born three years ago. At that time, eight journalists from different European countries were invited to cycle sections of the Rhine Cycle Route and to write articles about their experiences.  At the end of the trip, Anita Bakker from Fietsplatform, the Dutch National EuroVelo Coordinator, organised a little welcome reception for the journalists who arrived in the Hook of Holland.

Inspried, the tourist information center in Hoek van Holland decided that all cyclists who finished the Rhine Cycle Route should be rewarded for their achievement. The tourist information center designed a certificate for the cyclists and placed a sign (in four languages: German, English, Dutch and French) at the beach to welcome the cyclists and inform other people about EuroVelo 15. The sign was funded by Fietsplatform, the European Union and the Demarrage Project.

Over the past 3 years, around 200 certificates have already been handed out to cyclists upon their completion of the route. People from all over the world finish the Rhine Cycle Route successfully and arrive in the little coastal town Hook of Holland. Most of them are from Switzerland and Germany but some are also from other more distant countries such as Australia. They all have amazing stories to share with the tourist information center and are very excited about and fascinated with EuroVelo 15 - Rhine Cycle Route.
